History of OMS in Mexico
A survey team, visiting Mexico in May 1988, found that the country was truly a neighbor in need of the Gospel. The following January, the OMS Board of Trustees voted unanimously to enter Mexico as an official OMS field.
The Beginnings of the Mexico Field
Two OMS missionaries transferred from Ecuador to Mexico and arrived in September 1990 to begin work in evangelism and church planting, using Every Community for Christ (ECC) teams. That December, the first ECC campaign was held in San Jose, where the Jesus film was shown. Fourteen decisions were made for Christ. This was the beginning of the first church.
Two additional missionaries arrived on the field in January 1991 after language study. In March, the first church meeting was held in a rented building that had been a former day care. In May, the first Men for Missions International (MFMI) work team came to remodel the new rented facility, and in November, the first 8 people were baptized.
The Next 9 Years
A number of developments took place during the next 9 years. This included the founding of a seminary, the beginning of several more churches and the establishment of a missionary school. The first seminary graduation took place November 28, 1998 at the SEMBIMEX seminary, with three graduates. OMS had a celebration on September 24, 2000 for 10 years of ministering on the Mexico field. Over 600 people attended the celebration.
