Bangladesh Cyclone Relief
On May 25, 2009, Cyclone “Aila” packed winds up to 71 mph and made landfall along the coastline late in the afternoon. The cyclone crossed Bangladesh's southwestern coast, leaving at least 147 people dead and more than 3.47 million affected.
The overwhelming needs of this disaster will continue long after the tragedy is out of the headlines. OMS is requesting the ongoing donations to continue the process of assisting families affected by this natural disaster.
Panic struck the Ashasuni Government Flood Shelter at midnight on June 10, when the already damaged roof collapsed on the people who were seeking shelter there. People were killed and many more were injured and are in critical need of medical attention.
“Immediate relief assistance is the utmost need at this critical situation in Ashasuni area under Satkhira District,” said an OMS relief worker. Victims are starving to death, they do not have proper shelter or clothing and medicine is limited as disease continues to spread.
Funds raised by OMS for Bangladesh will be distributed by contacts with ties to indigenous emergency relief teams that are already in place and we have successful working relationship. These teams have vast experience with disaster relief and distributed blankets, food, water and medicines.
